The Whole 2012 Mayan Calendar/Armaggedon Thing

Kitty's abduction thread prompted me to start this one. Certainly she and many thousands/millions of people believe something momentous will occur this year, most likely towards the end of December.

I'm inclined to agree - to a point. I don't think the end of the Mayan calendar presages the end of earth's days. I just think they didn't get around to extending the calendar. (Or somebody did, but it's buried in a ruin somewhere.)

But I've felt some sort of change in the air the past couple of years. I have a sense the planet is moving towards...something. What I fret about a tad, is a sort of Butterfly Effect. If enough people start thinking (for want of a better term) "holocaustal" thoughts and come to believe them, what effect might that have if a couple of "ordinary" catastrophes strike around Dec. 2012? Mass hysteria, aided and abetted by today's lightning-fast information networks, is a possible, perhaps probable result.

We might be looking at a self-fulfilling Armageddon. And that would be really, really annoying.

Every year since we chipped words on stone tablets, somebody's been predicting the end of times. Do you feel this year's predictions of cataclysmic change carry any more weight than the myriad ones that preceded it?

To answer your question in a word:

No.

Throughout history, as you say, these sorts of predictions have been made time and time again and in every single case they have turned out to be utterly false. It will be the same this year. Even if the unstable among us cause something horrific to occur through acts of stupidity or just sheer panic, the Earth will continue to exist and there will continue to be human beings living on her. As much as we like to think we are capable of completely destroying the Earth, the worst we could do is severely screw up the ecosphere and cause the collapse of our civilization. That would be really, really bad, but in no way would it be the end of everything.

Perhaps I used the word Armaggedon too loosely. I don't think the Earth itself will cease to exist until the sun blinks out or we get smacked by an asteroid.

But it wouldn't take much more than the collapse of the internet to cause the sort of world-wide crisis that could set us back a generation or two, techno-wise. That kind of chaos could last a loooong time and few people, especially those living in large, urban centres, are equipped to ride it out.

I don't claim to know the future, but I'm more inclined to be optimistic than pessimistic.

In a word (or three), good times ahead! emoticon

We shall see what we shall see.

Armageddon, in the civilization busting sense, is certainly possible. But I don't think something like that will happen this year. We've had nutjobs predicting the downfall of society before and sanity has prevailed.

Remember the millennium bug kerfuffle? There was a guy who came to Canmore in the run-up to the year 2000 who was charging $400 a head to hear him talk about how you could prepare for the collapse of the world that Y2K was to bring about. I for one did not stock up on canned goods and ammo to fight off the hordes of starving maniacs this idiot was predicting would be banging on my door come January 1st, 2000. Instead, millions of people just like you and me upgraded their software and hardware so that it would know what to do when the clock ticked midnight that day, and we all survived with barely a hiccup.

I think the same will happen here, as far as this supposed end of days deadline goes. It will pass with a whimper and those who see disaster in everything will find something else to point at and claim "the end is nigh!"

Kinda sad, really.

I believe something will happen; I just don't know what, or to what degree. And I think even the most gifted of psychics can't say - those who are truthful admit anything of that magnitude is mostly subject to interpretation.

I just hope whatever it is is mostly painless and if I live through it, the world's wine supply doesn't go with it.

Which is why the channeled information that's offered in those ("woo-woo") websites emphasize(s) our avoiding FEAR-based thoughts. This is very important!

Don't watch crap movies (Chunky is already aware of this), listen to or believe all the bullsh*it news on TV, hate blogs, or what have you. We need to be very careful what we put in our minds during this pivotal year -- can't let them mess with our heads. emoticon

We are so much more powerful than we think we are. Gotta be more discriminating with our thoughts, is all. And choose our battles wisely. emoticon

You got that right, Kitty. Call it vibes, the force, whatever ... a negative mind-set can pull the energy field that connects us all in the wrong direction. We can all charge it up with positive energy!

The Mayans predicted the end of time, not the world. Their calendar worked on an recurring cycle, which restarts in December 2012. Cycles such as 'freak' weather, warmer or cooler climates, etc, are predicted to recur. They believe that patterns of human behaviour work on a similar cycle too, such as the propensity towards wars or conflict.

Gregg Braden explains it all in his book, Fractal Time.

I don't recommend that any of you read it, you understand. It's like wading through treacle.
