Re: A Wee Confession

Frank,

What's the best which may happen? You're diagnosed with something curable. Or you're diagnosed and pronounced good to go.

What's the worst? You wait until too late to be checked out. You die way too early from something which might not have otherwise killed you.

Logic is a powerful tool. Use it.

I don't reveal much, if anything, about myself. I'll do so this one time.

In 2005 I had a routine PSA test. Urologist said the assay was a bit above normal. He did a needle biopsy. Took several samples. Turned out I had prostate cancer.

There were several choices. Wait and watch. Several others, including radical prostatectomy. Mrs. Cur and I sat in his office. Thought about it for, oh hell, I don't know, maybe a minute.

We went for the radical procedure. Urologist suggested a surgery date about a month out. I said, "Tomorrow would be good." (True dialogue.) He liked our response.

As I recall, the surgery was about ten days later, during which time I donated two units of my blood for the surgery. (Always use your own blood if you can. It kinda knows you.)

Surgery was successful, but there were cells on the margin of the tissue. That meant the surgery may or may not have removed all the cells. No way to tell if cells had migrated to the prostatic bed.

Had Mrs. Cur and I waited a month for the cutting, who knows how far into the bed the cancer may have invaded.

Normal PSA for five years. Then, a PSA higher than normal. Forty days of radiation treatments, which, by the way, were no big deal.

Five years of normal PSA since then. My next assay is in June. Could the ugly sumbitch come back? Sure.

Are Mrs. Cur and I glad we went for it? Damn straight.

We're convinced that had we waited longer, the issues may well have been worse. We're REALLY glad we didn't do watch and wait or other available treatments. Treatments, meaning not such a high cure rate.

Thazz my story.

Not suggesting your potential issue relates to your prostate.

Am strongly advocating you get on with whatever the issue is if it's something Q and your boys thinks needs to be investigated.

I'll shut up. Well, I dunno if I will.

There is a huge billboard in our town that says something like, "300,000 men die every year from being stubborn."

You wanna be 300,001? Or live to see the billboard?

I'm genuinely touched by your concern folks and hope I can alleviate it.

What's ailing me isn't deadly, nor is it likely become so. (And it's not my prostate. Glad you're going on five years good, Cur.)

I have my reasons for waiting a while and they make sense to me but I don't intend to get into the nuts n' bolts in an open forum.

But trust me when I say I'm in no hurry to leave the planet. I'm in for the long haul.

I'll report more when there's more to report. Promise.

And thank you. emoticon

Good reply, Frank.

Hope I have not offended or overstepped my bounds.

My apologies if I have.

Well, Im glad someone said something. Ive been out of Franks life for some time now. (Not that I was really in it, but I did have the honor of knowing him for pert near ten years or so afore I lost track of him). My body is falling apart so I know the value of not wasting time medically. I am much relieved that your problem is not serious and that you are feeling better. Youve got friends and family who care for you, and personally, your first post made me n n nervous as hell. Be well and take care of yourself.

yer pal brian

Hey, Ol' Cur, here's a coot who kinda talks like you! Have you two met? emoticon

P.S. Unlike Frank here, we're at an advantage names-wise, right? I mean, I spilled my guts a few times here myself. Not to worry.

Glad to hear the good news from all fronts.

Me, I'm going in tomorrow for my semi-decade-ial hose up the tailpipe thingy. Last time the report was that I had a beautiful colon, though the bastid manning the Anal Invader didn't give me a video of the proceeding so I could put it up on YouTube and call it "MyTube".

Mebbe I'll ask again.... emoticon
