2012, the movie
I succumbed to incurable curiosity over the weekend and threw away 3.5 hours of my life by watching the mega-disaster movie 2012, starring John Cusack. A splendiforous blend of eye-popping special effects and mind-bending absurdity. The most true-to-life part of the whole ridiculous thing? Cusack's character is a novelist whose book sold 501 copies.

Sounds pretty decent. I like Cusack. He makes some quirky, interesting choices with his roles. And he's quite a talented writer too.

Re: 2012, the movie
I don't mind the ones that have good character development and keep at least a pinky-toe in the waters of reality. Deep Impact was one such, actually. But many, like 2012 or Armageddon and so on, are riddled with implausibilities to the point of being absurd.

Re: 2012, the movie
There's a very funny Irish comedian called Dara O'Briain (not a spelling error)who also happens to be a super-intelligent physicist.
He does a really funny routine about 2012. The whole premise of the film is 'the neutrinos are mutating!' causing the earth's core to heat up.
Apparently, this has physicists all over the world chuckling into their snifters at the outrageous ridiculousness of it all.

Re: 2012, the movie
Yep, I can see Hawking clicking his chortle button repeatedly over that one.
I rank 2012's premise down there with this TV movie I saw advertised whose premise was that a blast of frigid air from the sun was threatening to cause an ice age on Earth.
1 - the sun is basically a fusion reactor over eight hundred thousand miles in diameter. There ain't nothing even remotely frigid within millions of miles of it.
2 - a "blast" of AIR? Travelling 93 million miles through the vacuum of space?
Beyond ludicrous.
