Grumble

I was prowling around this dank ol' cave.

Came across an old Oster food steamer on a small rock ledge above our fire pit.

Now, the daing thaing is, we got a itty bitty generator Mrs. Cur made me haul up the dern mountain a whall back.

In the unlikely event any of you are dumber than me, that means we can generate 'tricity in small amounts.

Anyway, I'm thinkin' 'bout cooking up something in it. Thazz the easy part.

They's two baskets in the dern thing. A water reservoir in the bottom. A lid for the top, of course.

I ain't got no ideer what goes into it, ner how to cook whut I might up and put in it.

I checked the serial number. It's #000001. I expect that means it was manufactured at least a couple years ago.

I asked Mrs. Cur what to do with it. She gave me that "look."

Then she smiled. Faintly. "You'll figure it out if we're going to eat." That's prolly the nicest thing she's ever said to me. Damn fine person she is.

Need some help here.

If there's any doubt in yer minds, I don't need a lot of smart-mouth in your replies. Capisce?

Cur

Taters. Corn onna cob. Pretty much anything you can pull outta the ground, 'cept maybe a skeert ostrich, I don't think it would fit.

I've watched the missus use ours (ours is a relative term, not sure I've ever actually touched the thing). Anyways, water in the bottom, should be a line sayin' don't go over this or summat like that. Veggies in the top part. Plug it in and turn it on, then keep checking your tater or whatever with a long poky thing, don't wanna steam your hand.

That's about all there is to it, I think. emoticon

Chunky, I do believe you should be writing small appliance user manuals. emoticon

Cur, I've never used a steamer but I should. (Yes, Frank.. we should!) Google can help steer you to some fine recipes and even appliance compliance.

Ol' Cur, it sounds like you're referring to one of these c*ckamamie contraptions - third from the left.

For many years, even back when my "hubs" emoticon was alive, I've been using simple apparatuses that look like the three thingies on the right (we're talking top row in all cases here).

I steam veggies of some kind or another every bloody evening for dinner -- once in a while bake 'em in the oven on a cookie sheet.

Just find yourself a medium-large stainless steel pot and put some water on the bottom -- not much, you get so you know after a while, just don't cover the veggies that are waiting up thar' in the steamer. Then cook the lovelies 'till they turn a nice bright color (broccoli, chopped carrots, red cabbage, kale, collard greens, whatever-- I often cook more than one kind at a time.). Shouldn't take but a few minutes, tops.

To your good health!

Veggie Steamers

Edited to add: Some people cut thin strips of chicken cutlets and stick them in with the veggies while they're steaming. Doesn't take long to cook if the chicken pieces are small enough.

Edited again later to show off what I recently learned about turning words blue.

I'm onto my third steamer. The veggies retain ( enter high number here) percent of their nutrients and you can steam beautifully fluffy rice and fish...

Right, Sue. Boiling veggies in a pot of water drops all the nutrients/vitamins into the water. So if you do it that (the old-fashioned) way, make sure to drink the water.

I've steamed fish, too, but never tried to steam rice. Maybe you're talking instant rice, huh? I always make brown rice, so it'd probably take like forever.

No, Kits, just regular rice. Two parts water to one part rice in the solid plastic tub that comes with it. Steam for twenty minutes or so and it's done.

My grandmother used to drink the vegetable water too (bleuurghh). I use it to make gravy/sauce instead (if I've boiled the veggies).

Ah well then, we're talking two different items. I use just the basic stainless steel thingie that can be folded up, and mainly for veggies. No plastic tub or whatever comes with it.

Just put a small amount of water in a pan. The steamer should fit above it, near the top of the pan (veggies should not be touching the water). Bring it to a boil, then turn down the heat (don't let the water evaporate or there'll be hell to pay!).
