It was Chinese New Year for us yesterday, so I decided to make a not-Chinese dessert. Apple roses.

MAJOR YUMMAGE!
I wonder what it would cost to air-freight one of those out my way...

I love anything made with apples -- this indeed looks delicious.
So the only crust/dough is what we see along the edge of the dish? With (most of) the rest of it being cleverly arranged apple slices topped with powdered sugar?
How long did it take for you to crank this out, Altheat? Brown sugar, cinnamon, and butter added? Did you have to peel all those apples or did you cheat and open a can?

Re: Post your recipes here.
Speakin' of apples---
I got a recipe I'm right partial to. Mrs. cur don't partake of it, but thazz her prollem.
I hunt for the biggest apple I can find. Theys an orchard far down the mountain below this dank cave.
I puncture the apple many times with the tooth of a saber-tooth tiger I found once when I was foraging for blueberries. (BTW this recipe also uses blueberries.)
Carefully insert chopped jalapenos in holes in apple.
Then I take about four feet of intestine from a Gonzo Mountain Rat.
(Gonzo's are big. Mean, too. Got to whack 'em real hard upside the head to get their attention. Once you done that, then you twist their head off. Let 'em exsanguinate. Gut the Gonzo. Remove long intestine. Remove Gonzo meat from bones. Chop meat until it's in small particles.)
Mix Gonzo meat with whatever spices what may be at hand. I prefer ground mustard leaves, but others' tastes may vary. Add blueberries to the mix.
Stuff the Gonzo intestine with the meat-mustard leaves-blueberry mix.
Wrap stuffed intestine around apple. This will make several layers. Hint: Don't wrap the intestines too tight.
Then wrap the ball resulting ball in large leaves. Several layers are best.
Place ball on coals. Remove after one hour. Allow to cool for another hour.
Remove leaves.
Unwind intestines from apple.
Discard apple.
Serve six-inch sections with a varietal wine. Intestines have been infused with flavor of apple and jalapenos.
It's a meal to die for.
You'll likely have leftovers. Next time you're hungry, place a section of intestine on a hot rock outside your cave. Let it heat until the wonder odor wafts to you.
Enjoy
Cur P.S. Mrs. Cur looked over my shoulder whilst I wrote this. She is not speaking to me at the moment.

I believe the "to die for" part.
And the PS.

Re: Post your recipes here.
It was pretty tasty, I have to admit.
The apples! They were sliced very thinly, or I guess, as thinly as possible, with the skin on. That helps with the colour of the whole thing. I then cooked/stewed the apples in a bit of lemon juice, splash of water and brown sugar for a few minutes. As long as they aren't properly cooked, then it's all good. It's just to make them more pliable. I used some of the smaller slices of apple for the middle of the rose and kept bending more apple slices to get the rest of the rose.
The whole thing sits on a piece of pastry...and I didn't blind bake it (mistake, but this was just a random experiment). I probably will bake it next time, but the problem is that the apples stand up better on raw pastry, rather than cooked pastry. I might cook the pastry, put down a layer of custard or something...and then start assembling roses. Ideas!
Still, it was something that I'm happy with, so I'll do it again.
Another idea was to build each rose into its individual container, like a ramekin or something...one rose each
