BBQ

I can't imagine life without it. I probably bbq between 40 and 70 times a year. I rarely do fancy-assed stuff like roasts but love cooking fish, steaks, chops, chicken, kebobs, shrimp and even veggies.

And ribs. Mmmmmmm...ribs....

How 'bout you?

Re: BBQ

Frank, I have a very stupid question so don't get mad at me. emoticon

What's the difference between grilling and barbecuing? Does barbecuing mean the meat is slathered with sauce, or is there really no difference?

As a Recovering Vegetarian, I now need meat every day for health reasons, and have been experimenting with different recipes and cooking methods. I recently ordered a book on barbecuing grass-fed meat. Since I live in the city and have no access to a grill, I was thinking of getting those grills that are placed over the stove burners. Would I be able to barbecue on those things, or are they just for grilling? How about a grill pan? I know they're not even close to the functionality of having an outdoor barbecue/grill, but it's the best I can do. emoticon

Re: BBQ

It's my understanding the terms are interchangeable - but only if you're cooking outdoors over an open flame.

I know there are electric and stove-top grills that can do a decent job of cooking meat - the fats drain off and you can achieve the seared grill marks that outdoor bbq's provide. But indoor grills can't duplicate the flavour produced by the combination of heat, smoke and sauce.

No balcony? I lived for four years in a city apartment but had a small balcony. I bought a Hibachi and managed some fine meals on that little thing.

Re: BBQ

Since we don't bbq that often, we went with an electric. While it's not quite the same as a gas or briquet barbeque, it's pretty darn close and you don't have the gas tanks or dead charcoal mess to deal with.

Re: BBQ

I would imagine that most apartment buildings would no longer permit BBQs use on their balconies, these days. An electric grill would be a decent alternative. My friend just picked one up yesterday at a yard sale. When I find out if she likes it or not, I'll let you know, Liza.

Re: BBQ

Thanks, everyone!

In the meantime, I think I'm going to buy the grill pans that fit over gas burners:
