To Kindle, or Not to Kindle (or Nook for you Crazy Canukians)

I've decided to invest in a kindle. I like books, I like reading, I don't like taking up room in a suitcase on holiday with the 8 or 9 books i'll get through in a 2 weeks holiday so after much deliberation I decided on the Kindle over the Nook / Kobo / Sony e-reader series. If anyone is interested in why I made the decision to go for the kindle, i'll be happy to let you know. (warning, may get technical...)

So, my decision has been made, however, my question is this (without getting on to the bigger "is printed word dead etc" debate):

Would *you* consider an ebook device or are you purely a printed book person? And why?

We can save the bigger print v's electronic debate for another day emoticon

Funny you should ask! I bought a Kindle Fire for myself a few months ago. But, the convenience of loading books was not the deciding factor. I still much prefer the real McCoy and will go to the book store or library first.

I bought the Fire because I wanted something close to an iPad where I could log in to my email, Facebook and general internet without having to go down to the dungeon and fire up my PC. It serves its purpose for that.

I confess I have downloaded a few books since obtaining it, Stephen King's 11-22-63 being the first, because it was cheaper and more convenient than the $35.00, 900 page, real thing at the time. However, I just ordered the hardcover so I could add it to my collection.

Anyway, I prefer the printed option. The Kindle is certainly more travel-friendly, however.

E-readers of some sort will be part of most folks' toys within five years. I don't own one yet but it's only a matter of time.

I do like the multi-use aspect of the tablets, over a dedicated reader.

Glad you started this, Slick. Looking forward to your review when you've had the Kindle a while.

I'm sure I'd love to have an e-reader of sorts over time.. and much like Frank said, a multi-use tablet would be far more attractive to me than a single-purpose device (hush, Frank).

For now, I still prefer the real thing, and having a reader would probably not keep me from continuing to stock up on inexpensive paperbacks at yard sales.

Well the Fire is still not out over in Blighty yet, so we don't have that option (unless we get it on import) but I have an iPad anyway and to be honest, reading ebooks on the iPad is very bad. Its so heavy and the screen isn't great especially in direct sunlight, plus i'd be scared of it being pinched while I went for a swim whereas the kindle (at £60 as I bought it 2nd hand, v's £400 for the iPad) is much less expensive to "lose" when abroad.

I think everyone should have some sort of Tablet, and the Kindle looks to be the better choice for people who just want to check emails and do a bit of web browsing without using a PC / laptop all the time. The iPad is shiny though ... very very shiny ... my prrrrrecious.

Ahem..

The Kindle Touch was only released here on Monday this week, we're months behind you lot o'er there.

I've gone for the latest model non-touch Kindle, i'll let you know what its like when it arrives.

I should add, if I didn't have the iPad, I think I would have imported a Fire by now to use as a multi-purpose device. I'm not platform / computer agnostic like some people, i'll happily use whatever is better to get the job done. Apple / Android / Windows etc.

I have a Kobo, and I think it's great. But it is a supplement to my 'real' books as opposed to a replacement.

I use the Kobo to carry stuff around with me like computer manuals, recording books, free e-books I might not have considered buying in print form, etc.

One of the most fun things I've done with my Kobo is to create my own pdf files that I can load into it, such as an annotated photo album of my family. It's kinda like an electronic version of the old fold-out wallet photo thingy from days gone by. You'll remember those, Frank emoticon

It also has wifi capability and a 'beta' web browser, though it's definitely not ready for prime time yet. But considering what it can do and that it's slightly smaller than a trade paperback and thinner than a slice of bread, it's awfully handy.

There's nothing more exciting and lovely than hurrying home with a new book and a packet of chocolate biscuits.

I really enjoy getting to know my book before I start reading. I like to read the foreword, the acknowledgements and have a good sniff before I start to read. I can't do this on my Kindle.

I love that you can be reading a book thirty seconds after deciding to buy it, but the Kindle doesn't measure up in any other way to a real book.

I have one of the original Kindles. I like it with two exceptions: the contrast is not high enough to make reading comfortable unless the light is really bright and, with no backlight, you can't read in bed at night with the light off.

However, I have a kindle app on my phone and use it all the time. Love it.

Still want an iPad because they look so damn cool, though.

My eyesight's not getting any better. I'd need a reader that was backlit and with adjustable font size.

I'd need a screen bigger than phone-size too. You must still have keen eyes, Andie.
